Counselling/Psychotherapy

Being listened to without judgment is the essential ingredient of both counselling and psychotherapy. They both offer an opportunity to explore the positive and negative aspects of our lives in a safe environment.

Counselling

Counselling focuses on current crises, offering support and understanding as we come to terms with the various challenges life can offer: the break-up of a relationship, problems at work, a death, accident or ill-health. This is mainly short term and can last from 6 to 20 sessions.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy involves discovering the unconscious core beliefs that lead us to repeat patterns of behaviour throughout our lives. These unconscious beliefs shape our life experiences and in order to live a more healthy life we need to make them conscious. This process involves exploring early hurts and traumas in order to recognise and move on from their disabling aspects. It is a long term process.

Family Therapy

Family therapy attempts to understand and address human difficulties/issues in the total context within which these occur. This approach to therapy offers a safe space where the client is not isolated as the cause of the difficulty or problem but takes account of the family as having a deep connectedness and influence. Family Therapy examines how the current issue is maintained and what prevents it resolution Family Therapy is generally short term and cost effective.

Group Psychotherapy

Group psychotherapy aims to give the individual the opportunity to explore in a group setting their feelings and patterns of behaviour and to look at how they deal with the dynamics of relationships. The group setting offers both support and a challenge and can be useful for those who have had some individual Counselling to practice the insights gained.

Working with Children

Play is a vital component in every child's development and when used therapeutically it can offer a child a way to express their mixed up feelings in a non verbal, non threatening way. As adults we use language to express what’s upsetting us, whereas children use play. Play Therapy helps a child make sense of whatever is upsetting them and helps them deal with their emotions more appropriately. It also helps them learn how to better manage relationships and conflicts, which are building blocks for their future.

What you can expect?

It can result in a reduction in anxiety, a raised sense of confidence and self-esteem, a change in behaviour and improved relations with family, teachers and friends.

How long does it take?

Some children respond to short term intervention, however when problems have persisted for a long time or are complicated, a longer-term may be required.

Sessions are once a week at the same day, time and place, as consistency is crucial for developing a trusting relationship.
