Qualifications / Academic Background : MIAHIP, Advanced Diploma Counselling and Psychotherapy, BSc.
Biochemistry, Dip. Social Science. Deirdre graduated with an Advanced Diploma in Psychotherapy and Counselling from the Tivoli Institute, Dun Laoghaire. She also holds Bachelor of Science from University College Dublin and a Diploma in Social Science from Dublin Business School. Deirdre is an accredited member of the Irish Association of Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy (IAHIP) and she abides by their code of ethics. She is committed to on-going training and professional development, and participates in training workshops and seminars on a regular basis. She attends regular supervision as part of her ethical commitment to her work.
Work Experience : Deirdre’s previous employment includes working in both the private and
voluntary sectors and her work has predominantly been people-oriented. She has worked with
organisations such as ALONE and Comfort Keepers Homecare so has a good understanding
of issues such as loneliness, bereavement and family challenges. She has previously trained
and worked as a Helpline Volunteer with AWARE for their Support Line, and has worked as
a Volunteer Counsellor in Living Life Counselling Centre in Bray. Deirdre has worked with
many clients on issues including anxiety, negative thinking, stressmanagement, depression,
family and relationship difficulties, bereavement and loss, work related issues and personal
development. Deirdre has currently undertaken the 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training programme
with Yoga Sacred Space in Wicklow. Her practice is also informed by yoga and mindfulness with a
strong emphasis of the integration of mind and body.
Underpinning Philosophy : Deirdre practices as a Humanistic and Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist. She uses a gentle and compassionate approach to meet the client wherethey are in life to gain an understanding of them and their needs. Some of the styles she uses are Person-Centred, Gestalt, Psychodynamic; tailoring the therapy to suit each client’s individual needs and requirements. Deirdre offers an individual a safe, confidential and supportive space where he or she can explore the reality of their lives; including thoughts, feelings, emotions, struggles, concerns, desires and goals and works at a pace that you dictate and is right for you. It is time dedicated to you; to focus on your needs and how best to meet them. Deirdre views the quality of the therapeutic relationship as the focal point to the success of therapy which includes aspects such as genuineness, unconditional positive regard and
empathy. She respects the clients’ perspective and experience and aims to work collaboratively with them to bring difference to their lives.
Nearly everyone faces challenges from time to time, and Deirdre believes that therapy is an
incredibly useful tool that helps people manage difficulties by becoming more self-aware,
resolving painful feelings, change negative thinking patterns and behaviours, gaining
confidence and self-acceptance. Many people who experience a loss of meaning in their lives
